The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications recently announced new student leaders for the fall 2022 semester. More than 120 students are participating in CoJMC’s Experience Lab, an experiential learning program that gives students the chance to gain hands-on experiences from day one. Students work with faculty and professional mentors to build their academic skill sets while exploring their professional interests in one of the college’s media outlets: Buoy, Jacht, KRNU, Nebraska Nightly, Unlimited Sports, Heartland and the Nebraska News Service.
The Experience Lab offers students real-world experience by giving them the opportunity to work on content for the public and clients. Each semester, the Experience Lab student leadership team oversees the day-to-day operations of the programs, which consists of the following members in fall 2022:
Buoy – Paige Brophy, Lincoln, and Ethan Burger, Brookhaven, Georgia
Jacht – Bailey Horky, Lincoln, director of account strategy; Gabrielle Becton, Rapid City, South Dakota, director of communications; Hannah-Kate Kinney, Omaha, director of multimedia; Zoe Matheson, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, director of business development; and Sydney Wagner, Gretna, director of public relations.
KRNU – Mark Thayer, Bellevue, and Helen Howard, Lincoln
Nebraska Nightly – Marko Jerkovic, Lincoln, and Lance Vie, Nickerson
Unlimited Sports – Nathan Hawkins, Bellevue, and Sam Alessandro, Omaha
Nebraska News Service – Hanna Christensen, Douglas, and Lauren Penington, Parker, Colorado
Heartland – Michael Coonce, Elkhorn, and Odelia Amenyah, Lincoln
Experience Lab political lead – Zach Wendling of Lincoln
Experience Lab’s Co-directors Jemalyn Griffin and Jill Martin are looking forward to working with students who are passionate about journalism, broadcasting, sports communication, advertising and public relations.
“We are thrilled to see these student leaders uphold the college’s mission of nurturing creativity and curiosity in every student from the first day they join the CoJMC family,” Martin said.
The Experience Lab began meeting Aug. 23 and will meet regularly throughout the semester until early December.
