Dean's Update September 2021

Monday, September 27, 2021 - 9:00am

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Happy Homecoming Week! I’m looking forward to seeing you this Friday, from 5-8 p.m., for the CoJMC Homecoming Party. Partake in appetizers and adult beverages while meeting our new faculty, getting a sneak peek at the Agency Experience Lab and checking out the construction progress on the studio redesign. We’ll be making a big announcement about the studio at the party. I hope to see you there!

In honor of Homecoming, this newsletter links to recent stories written by and about our alumni and current students, including Angel Jennings, Grace Fitzgibbon, Tony MotonMargaret Nongo-Okojokwu, Victoria Baker and Drake Keeler. Stories are from Nebraska Quarterly where CoJMC alum Kirstin Swanson Wilder is editor-in-chief.

We have several guests in our classrooms this week as well, providing unique perspectives and connections for our students. Kevin Abourezk, former reporter and editor for the Lincoln Journal Star and current managing editor of Indianz.com, is on campus for our multicultural homecoming celebration, photographers Nikki Boertman (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital) and Maria de Jesus (Houston Chronicle) are joining our photojournalism classes, country music superstar Garth Brooks is Zooming with our journalism students, and our Jacht students will be joined in the Agency Experience Lab by area professionals for the American Marketing Association SkillSchool. Oh, to be a student again!

We are also celebrating the achievements of our faculty, staff and students. Associate Dean Adam Wagler was selected for the Big Ten Academic Leadership Program, Graduate Assistant David Ornelas was named a Nebraska Governance and Technology Center fellow, Assistant Professor Ciera Kirkpatrick published an article in Health Communication exploring how to recruit participants for clinical trials and Associate Professor John Shrader and Graduate Student Services Coordinator Carly Morse were selected for the University Conduct and Appeals Board

Homecoming is a time to reconnect and celebrate. I hope you can join us at the Homecoming Party Friday night or at an upcoming Drinks with the Dean in your city.

Go Huskers!

Shari
