Dean's Update August 2021

Tuesday, August 31, 2021 - 9:00am

Dear Alumni and Friends,

We’re already in week two, and students are starting to settle into the rhythm of the fall semester. Tonight, our Student Advisory Board is hosting a Club Fair for The Circle, KRNU, Ad Club, Daily Nebraskan and other RSOs to recruit new members. Oh, how we have missed having students back in Andersen Hall and engaged on campus!

We have four new professionals in residence starting in the Experience Lab this month. Sports editor of the Seward County Independent, Stephanie Croston, co-host of Severe and Benning in the Morning at NRG Media Omaha, Mike’l Severe, studio/remote production supervisor at Nebraska Public Media, Ryan Dobesh, and sports reporter at The Omaha World-Herald, Dirk Chatelain, will work with our students at KRNU 90.3, Nebraska Nightly and Nebraska News Service.

We also have six new faculty starting this fall. Drs. Kelli Boling and Ciera Kirkpatrick and Prof. Brian Hubbard joined the advertising and public relations faculty, Drs. Jason Stamm and Brian Petrotta joined the sports media and communication faculty and Visiting Prof. Shoun Hill joined the journalism and broadcasting faculty. I am so impressed by these new faculty and can already see the impact they are having on our students.

You can also make an impact on our students by becoming a mentor through Husker Connect. This fall we are pairing our sophomore students with mentors from Husker Connect during a five-week professional development course. Whether you are interested in a short-term or long-term mentorship or just want to share opportunities and internships with current CoJMC students, we would love to get you involved!

I look forward to seeing many of you at Football Friday the night before our home opener against Fordham. I’ll also be at the Husker Huddle at Oklahoma on Sept. 18 and would love to meet up with the CoJMC alums who are making the trip down to Norman. If you are in the DC area, please watch for your invite to Drinks with the Dean on Sept. 28. Finally, I hope everyone marks their calendars for our Homecoming Celebration on Oct. 1 in Andersen Hall. I can’t wait to show you around our new space and welcome you home to Dear old Nebraska U.

Go Huskers!
