Advertising and Public Relations Minor

Minoring in advertising and public relations means being part of the next generation to take over the media landscape, whether retail and corporate advertising and marketing, media sales, brand management, media planning, account management, research, public relations, media relations, special event planning, mobile and digital communications, creative concepting, sports media relations, digital insights and analytics, copywriting, or layout and design. Students build communication-related skills through a minor designed to emphasize media, strategy, planning, and implementation in creative problem-solving. 

*This minor is only open to students outside of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Minor Requirements (18 credits)

Required Courses (12 credits)

  • JOMC 101: Principles of Mass Media (3 credits)
  • ADPR 151: Introduction to Advertising and Public Relations (3 credits)
  • JOMC 130: Introduction to Design Thinking (1 credit)
  • JOMC 131: Visual Communication Core Modules I (1 credit)
  • JOMC 132: Visual Communication Core Modules II (1 credit)
  • ADPR 283: Strategy Development for Advertising and Public Relations (3 credits)

Electives (6 credits)

Studnets can choose any two 300-400 level ADPR or JOMC course. Example courses include: 

  • ADPR 350: Public Relations Planning and Strategy
  • ADPR 355: Event Planning for Branded Activations + Experiences
  • ADPR 360: Media Planning and Strategy
  • ADPR 434: Digital Insight & Analytics
  • JOMC 462: The Social Media Landscape

Notes

  • Electives can be any course from ADPR or JOMC. If you would like to take a course that you do not meet the stated prerequisites for, please submit a permission code request here and an advisor will review your eligibility. If eligible, a CoJMC advisor will email you a permission code to enroll in the course.
  • Students need at least three semesters to complete either option of the ADPR minor.
  • All courses must be graded and completed with a C or above.

  • All minor students take the six-credit sequence of courses called Communication Design (JOMC 130-134). You can learn more about this important and unique sequence of courses and the skills you’ll learn by watching this short video.

  • You have two options for completing this sequence:

    • Over three semesters (JOMC 130 + 131) + (JOMC 132) + (JOMC 133 + 134)

    • Over two semesters (JOMC 130 + 131 + 132) + (JOMC 133 + 134)

  • If you are declared as a BRDC minor, you will be able to enroll in these classes without permission codes.
