Student Policies
Dean's List
Each semester the college distributes a dean’s list. To be included on the semester dean’s list, a student must have earned at least a 3.7 semester GPA on 12 or more graded hours.
Graduation with Distinction
In recognition of outstanding academic excellence, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications recommends the bachelor's degree With Distinction, With High Distinction and With Highest Distinction. All students graduating with distinction must meet the following criteria:
- Candidates must have completed at least 45 hours at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln by the time of graduation.
- Eligibility is based on the cumulative grade point average of all credit hours taken at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln prior to the beginning of the term in which the student receives his or her degree.
Any student, regardless of whether or not they are in the University Honors program, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above in their penultimate (second to last) semester is eligible to complete a Thesis/Creative Project in the college. The successful completion of a thesis/creative project will increase your distinction level by one tier upon graduation. Students in the University Honors Program need to complete this process in addition to the University Honors Program requirements.

Center for Academic Success & Transition
What it is: The Center for Academic Success and Transition (CAST) is dedicated to engaging, empowering, and supporting all students both in and out of the classroom. CAST provides a comprehensive suite of services designed to facilitate students' academic and personal development.

Student Legal Services
What it is: Student Legal Services (SLS) offers free legal advice and representation to registered UNL students. The service is staffed by three attorneys and is located in Room 335 of the Student Union.
Why you should visit: You should visit SLS if you need legal advice or representation in areas such as consumer issues, criminal misdemeanors, divorces, landlord-tenant disputes, and small claims court. The attorneys provide consultations, court representation in Lancaster County, and referrals for other legal matters. If you have a legal question, SLS is here to help.'
