Laura Madeline Wiseman, Ph.D., is the Business and Technical Communications Coordinator and a lecturer. She has been teaching at UNL since 2006. Currently, her classes focus on business, technical, and strategic communications, writing, and social media.
Professionally, Madeline is a writer and editor. She is the author of several books and the editor of two anthologies and the journal, The Chapbook Interview. Recent books by Madeline incorporate aspects of technical communications. Yoga Birds is a children's book of yoga published under her pen name. It includes a how-to pose guide and sequences that bring together the mind and body, connecting breath with posture, presence, and play. Several of her books focus on long-distance cycling and the logistical, technical, and problem-solving aspects of the road. What a Bicycle Can Carry documents a 4,280-mile cross-country bicycle journey. A Bicycle's Echo is a linked collection of essays that explore bicycle commuting, repair and maintenance, and long-distance bike rides in Nebraska. Safety Measures documents her solo-bicycle ride across the country and the logistics of safe bicycle travel for women.
Her writing background revolves around storytelling across genres, including creative non-fiction, essay, and literary forms. Much of her work explores stories related to gender, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Her creative writing, nonfiction, and book reviews have appeared in Margie, Mid-American Review, Poet Lore, Blackbird, Arts & Letters, Prairie Schooner, Feminist Studies, The Iowa Review, Ploughshares, and Calyx.
Madeline's research interests include curriculum design, development, and innovation. Her pedagogical essay “Shaking the Magic 8 Ball: Social Media for Readers and Writers” appears in Teaching Literature with Digital Technology: Assignments (Bedford/St. Martins) and her essay, “Dear Diary: Violence, Confession, and Creative Writing Pedagogies.” Dispatches from the Classroom: Graduate Student Essays on Creative Writing Pedagogy (Continuum Press). Her teaching has been honored by the UNL Teacher's Council and the UNL Parents Association.
She has received a Hitchcock Fellowship, a Louise Van Sickle Fellowship, the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Fellowship, and grants from the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts and the Center for the Great Plains Studies.
