Where did you transfer from, and what led you to consider a new college or major?

I graduated from Bradley University in 2023 with a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education and History. I taught high school history, but then realized that wasn’t the path for me. I always wanted to attend the University of Nebraska, so I knew when it was time for a change that this was the only place I wanted to be. I am now pursuing a second bachelor's degree in sports media and communication. I love sports and found comfort in them when I was struggling. Nebraska offered a program where my credits transferred, and I could focus on my CoJOMC classes.

What made you choose the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at UNL?

I chose the College of Journalism and Mass Communications because not only did they have the new degree I wanted, but my advisor, Karez, was so helpful. My advisor answered all my questions about making the transition and what this new chapter would look like. They made me feel welcomed, even when I was nervous about starting a new degree.

How did you navigate the transfer process, and what helped you feel supported along the way?

I navigated the transfer process by getting involved and getting to know my professors. My professors made me feel welcomed and seen, even though I was new to what they were teaching and learning. They saw the potential in me when not a lot of people did.

What opportunities at CoJMC—classes, student media, clubs, or internships—have made a difference in your experience here?

When I got to UNL, I was nervous about getting involved and felt overwhelmed by the options. I got to join the Unlimited Sports Experience Lab, which allowed me to learn real-world experience by publishing my work on the website. I am now an assistant editor for Unlimited Sports for this upcoming fall. I also gained connections through the faculty, which allowed me to accept an internship with the Athletic department this upcoming year.

How has transferring to CoJMC shaped your academic goals or career path?

Transferring to UNL was one of the best decisions I made because I have gotten to learn new skills and gained opportunities I could never imagine. Being at Nebraska has allowed me to intern for the professional volleyball team, League One Volleyball, in Omaha. It has also allowed me to build stronger relationships with my professors, enabling me to achieve academic goals that I had never previously accomplished. I am able to live out the dreams and goals I set for myself, and I have the support to achieve them.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about transferring to UNL and the College of Journalism and Mass Communications?

I would tell them to connect with their academic advisor to lay out what the next chapter looks like. Talking with my advisor calmed all my nerves about joining the college, and I came in knowing a friendly face. I would also tell them to get involved, look at what the college and university offer, so they can learn more about that organization.
