Alex Fernando is the assistant director of recruitment at the Nebraska College of Journalism and Mass Communications, a role he has held since January 2019. In this front-facing position, Alex provides leadership and coordination for all aspects of undergraduate student recruitment for the college. His primary focus is on recruiting undergraduate students, but he also supports graduate recruitment initiatives and events as needed.

Alex is responsible for developing and implementing data-driven recruitment strategies and initiatives designed to enroll a high-achieving and diverse student body that aligns with the college’s recruitment goals. He administers the recruitment budget in coordination with the business and operations manager and maintains positive relationships with personnel at secondary schools, community colleges, four-year institutions, community agencies, faculty, alumni, and others involved in student recruitment. He ensures representation of the college at all recruitment events, including Office of Admissions daily campus visits programs, Red Letter Days, Honors and Diversity Events, and other recruitment activities across the state and country.

Additionally, Alex coordinates the hiring and work of student ambassadors who assist at recruitment events and works closely with the college’s marketing and communication team to produce content for various communications channels. He provides regular reports on recruitment activities and outcomes for the college.

Beyond his role at the university, Alex is a disk jockey and emcee at DelRay Ballroom, a position he has held since March 2021. He also worked as a freelance writer for Nebraska Life Magazine from March 2021 to August 2022.

Alex holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, completed in 2023. He also earned a Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management in 2021 and a Graduate Certificate in Public Relations and Social Media in 2019 from the same institution. Additionally, he holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Journalism in Broadcasting, both from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, completed in 2018.
