The end of the year provides a great opportunity to welcome our incredible alumni back to campus. In the last month we welcomed back MRM Global Creative Director Ronald Ng (’93) and New York Times Reporter Dionne Searcey (’93) to talk about their experience in global advertising and journalism. We also celebrated the opening of Joel Sartore’s (‘86) ‘Photo Ark’ exhibit at Morrill Hall and Vern Powers’ (’84) honor with the Jeff Vaske Service in Entrepreneurship Award.

University of Nebraska–Lincoln NSAC Celebrates 11 Consecutive Years

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications recently completed 11 consecutive years of participation in the National Student Advertising Competition with a second-place finish in the District 9 regional competition. In addition to the runner-up prize, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln team also received the Best Creative Award and Michael Goff was recognized as the District 9 Advisor of the Year.

Jake Bunger

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Student Wins National Competition to Connect PepsiCo and Musical Acts

Lincoln, April 16, 2015 -- Jake Bunger, a junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, won the PepsiCo Meeting of the Minds competition, a nationwide contest that challenged college students to come up with a concept that would tie the company to emerging musicians. Bunger won a summer marketing internship in New York City and a special meeting with PepsiCo executives.

CoJMC grad earns Fulbright to Turkey

Jennifer Gotrik, an August 2014 graduate of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to spend the 2015-2016 academic year in Turkey. She will be an English Teaching assistant to Turkish university students.

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Students win Eric Sevareid Awards at Midwest Journalism Conference

The annual Midwest Journalism Conference recognized the 2015 Eric Sevareid Award winners from the six-state region. University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications students and faculty won four first place awards.

Barney McCoy

Barney McCoy Receives Award of Excellence at Canada International Film Festival

A documentary directed by Barney McCoy will be honored with an Award of Excellence by the 2015 Canada International Film Festival. McCoy is associate professor of broadcasting at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Sriyani Tidball and Jamie Williams Participate in Shut Out Trafficking

The National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) has partnered with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF's End Trafficking project to create Shut Out Trafficking, a program to raise awareness against human trafficking on ten university and college campuses across the United States during the 2014-2015 academic year.

Hearst Awards

Mara Klecker finishes second in Hearst Personality Profile Writing and University of Nebraska–Lincoln CoJMC Places Second in the Nation

Mara Klecker placed second in the Hearst personality profile writing competition. She wins a $2,000 scholarship for her piece titled, “At home in America: ‘I am so thankful.’” Chris Heady tied for 14th place with his piece, “Road to recovery: Former Husker Anthony Steels overcomes drug addiction.” There were 99 entries in this competition, submitted from 56 schools.

CoJMC students win 10 Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards

University of Nebraska–Lincoln wins 10 SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards

The Society of Professional Journalists recognized the 2014 Mark of Excellence Awards winners from Region 7. University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications students won 10 awards in 10 different categories – a first for the university.

Shelby Wolfe and Sierra Ramsay

Shelby Wolfe finishes second and Sierra Ramsay finishes ninth in Hearst multimedia competition

Shelby Wolfe placed second in the Hearst multimedia competition for her multimedia presentation, “Relying on the sea: Pollution threatens the livelihood of green mussel farmers.” She wins a $2,000 scholarship.

Sierra Ramsay placed ninth in the Hearst multimedia competition for her multimedia presentation, “Rising from the rubbish: A mother’s impact on a village of trash pickers.” This story is about a woman who spends most of her time picking through trash at Bantar Gebang, Indonesia’s largest trash dump.

Jerry Warren

CoJMC Graduate Jerry Warren, Press Aide to Presidents Nixon and Ford, Dies at 84

Jerry Warren graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in 1952 with a degree in journalism. He died on Friday, March 20 in Arlington, Virginia at the age of 84.
