Since 1994, HuskerVision has given students in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications an opportunity to grow their sports broadcasting skillset through producing Husker sports.
Former ad agency Snitily Carr won the bid to do animation for HuskerVision in its first 10 years, during which CoJMC alumni Doug Carr ('90) and Dave Snitily ('92) did professional freelance work. Today, Carr is the Director of Development at the University of Nebraska Foundation and Snitily is the Director of Communication at Crete Carrier Corporation. See the very first tunnel walk here.
Thirty years later, HuskerVision is celebrating a new era with the unveiling of a $12M, 25,200-square-foot multimedia production facility in Memorial Stadium. The space houses HuskerVision, Creative and Emerging Media, Huskers Radio Network and the athletic photography team.
HuskerVision produced its first game in the new space during the home opener against Akron. The new area was designed and built by BeckTV and their lead project engineer, Brock Raum, is also a former HuskerVision student (2007-12) and 2011 CoJMC broadcasting graduate.
"This was a special project for our BeckTV team," Raum said. "HuskerVision has a reputation nationwide as a leader in this space, and this will be the standard for university production facilities for years to come. As a former HuskerVision staff member, I am so proud to have played a role in building this beautiful facility where future generations will catapult their careers just like I did."
Nebraska Athletics employs over 100 University of Nebraska students in these areas, and the new facility is centered around an open workspace that will accommodate workstations for over 30 students.
Senior Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Multimedia and CoJMC 2000 graduate Brandon Meier said HuskerVision content teams were previously located in four different areas of the stadium.
"This facility will allow all our content creators to collaborate, share, and increase the efficiency and quality of all our productions and digital content," Meier said.
Assistant Athletic Director for Creative & Emerging Media and 2017 CoJMC graduate Alex Rehurek told the media that his team racks up approximately 100 terabytes of photos and videos—equivalent to approximately 25,000 two-hour movies or 170,000 hours of music—each year.
Rehurek and his team stream more press conferences than anyone in the nation and their archives date back to 1994.
"We're ready to do more for Husker fans going forward," Rehurek said. "There's nothing like this."
This new facility will support the new 4K/HDR, LED big screen inside Memorial Stadium and Pinnacle Bank Arena. 1987 CoJMC graduate and University of Nebraska Foundation Video Producer Lance Schwartz flew a drone through HuskerVision's new space, watch it here.
