Karez Hassan, an academic advisor in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, was awarded the University of Nebraska Staff Kudos Award. The university-wide honor, presented by the NU Board of Regents, celebrates staff who go above and beyond in their contributions to the university's academic mission. Hassan was recognized during the Board of Regents meeting on April 11.

Hassan is known for her unwavering dedication to student success, ensuring students are academically and personally supported. In the past year, she's taken on the additional responsibility of advising 80+ CoJMC graduate students while maintaining her undergraduate advising duties and continuing to elevate the college's advising standards.

"Karez worked hard this summer to create an amazing graduate student advising guide," CoJMC Director of Advising Alisa Smith said. "The guide has helped us provide more consistent advising to our graduate students and better train and prepare future advisors."

When the college lost half of its advising team earlier in the year, Hassan stepped up without hesitation. She met with a record number of students and has continued to serve as a pillar of institutional knowledge and support despite challenges.

"Karez is the best advisor I have," CoJMC student Nhi Truong said. "Every time I have concerns about my academic or career path, she is willing to help. The information she shares is really helpful and she knows a lot to help me succeed outside of CoJMC!"

Hassan has also played a pivotal role in onboarding and training the college's two new academic advisors, ensuring a smooth transition for the team and student support.

New CoJMC academic advisor Vanessa Killen appreciated Hassan's guidance and mentorship as she adjusted to her new role.

"She patiently walked me through processes, shared her wealth of knowledge and provided unwavering support every step of the way," Killen said. "Thanks to her, I felt confident and prepared to assist our students effectively."

In addition to her advising duties, Hassan has been a key figure in enhancing the student experience outside of one-on-one advising. She was instrumental in updating the college's First Year Experience course, JOMC 100, to better serve incoming students.

Parents of students have taken notice of Hassan's support and dedication—like Jenny Washburn, who appreciated that Hassan took the time to get to know her son and help him find his interests.

"Karez explained his graduation path and helped solidify his schedule to best meet his needs," Washburn said. "I am so thankful that she will be his advisor on his journey."

Hassan embodies the college's core values of nurturing curious and creative minds, believing in hard work and pursuing truth. Her efforts, especially during times of transition and change, have made a lasting impact on the college community, and we're proud to congratulate her on this well-earned recognition and thank her for her continued commitment to student success.
