May 2022 journalism graduate David Berman was selected to intern on the design center team at USA Today as part of the Dow Jones News Fund internship program.

Last year Berman didn’t make it into the program, but it was still one of his goals so last October he applied again for their multiplatform editing and business reporting programs.

A few months later he got the email saying he was accepted into their multiplatform editing program and that it would kick off with an online residency at Temple University during the last week of May.

“It was an intensive online course that prepared me for what I was going to be doing at USA Today,” Berman said. “They warned us to completely clear our schedule because we’d have work outside the class too.”

Berman’s first day at USA Today was June 6 and he’s now half way through the 10 week program. His main role is editing stories from all over Gannett, the company that owns USA Today and several local media stations in 45 states.

Although Berman wishes he could experience working at USA Today’s headquarters in D.C., he sees the benefit of being able to virtually do the internship while living in Lincoln.

Berman got his journalism degree from CoJMC this May, but he’s taking two courses this summer to complete his marketing major so he’ll graduate from the College of Business next month.
