The College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has unveiled an accelerated master’s program that allows students to earn both a Bachelor of Journalism and a Master of Arts degree in as little as five years. This new initiative is designed to fast-track students' education, providing them with a competitive edge in the media industry.

Students begin their journey as undergraduates in one of the college’s four majors: advertising and public relations, broadcasting, journalism or sports media and communications. They then advance to one of two master’s specializations: integrated media communications or professional journalism.

What sets this program apart is its flexibility. Students can take up to twelve credit hours of graduate-level courses during their undergraduate studies, which count toward both degrees. After completing their bachelor's degree, they spend an additional year on graduate coursework to earn their master’s degree.

"The accelerated master’s program is a game-changer for our students," said Adam Wagler, associate dean for academic programs. "It provides a streamlined path to advanced education, saving time and resources while equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the media industry."

Junior broadcasting major Mia Sadlouskos, one of the first students admitted to the program, shared her excitement: "I chose to enroll in the College of Journalism's accelerated master's program because I want to challenge myself academically and advance my expertise in digital marketing,” Sadlouskos said. “The professors here are exceptional in their fields and dedicate themselves to seeing their students succeed."

To qualify, students must be full-time undergraduates in one of the CoJMC’s majors, have at least sophomore standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The program's inaugural cohort began in the spring of 2024, with a full launch set for this fall.

The benefits of the accelerated master’s program extend beyond the classroom. Graduates will enter the workforce with a higher level of expertise and experience, making them attractive candidates for top positions in the media industry. By integrating advanced studies into their undergraduate education, students can develop a more comprehensive understanding of their field and build a robust professional network.

"The accelerated program is perfectly aligned with the fast-paced nature of the media industry," said Shari Veil, Jane T. Olson Dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. "Our students will be better prepared to tackle real-world challenges and innovate in their careers."

As the only ACEJMC-accredited program in Nebraska, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications is committed to nurturing curious and creative minds to thrive in the ever-changing media and communication professions. The accelerated master’s program exemplifies the college’s dedication to educational innovation and its commitment to preparing students for success in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
