The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Journalism and Mass Communications received its Certification in Education for Public Relations from the Public Relations Society of America.

Established in 1989 as a voluntary program, Certification in Education for Public Relations (CEPR) recognizes academic programs that demonstrate excellence in curriculum, faculty, resources, student outcomes and commitment to the profession. Fewer than 50 programs worldwide hold the certification.

“This certification reflects the dedication of our faculty to preparing students for meaningful and impactful careers in public relations,” Shari Veil, Jane T. Olson Dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, said. “We are proud to join the select group of programs recognized by PRSA for their commitment to advancing the field.”

The review process included a self-assessment by the college, headed by Associate Professor Betsy Emmons, followed by a certification review process for the college’s undergraduate and graduate public relations programs through the PRSA Educational Affairs Committee.

The certification process also included a site visit from two PRSA members—a full-time educator and an APR-credentialed practicing professional who examined the college's curriculum, resources, facilities and university support of its programs.

During the three-day site visit, the reviewers met with CoJMC faculty, administrators and students and attended PR-focused courses and experiential learning practicums. They also contacted internship providers, employers of graduates and other local practicing professionals to assess alumni from the public relations program and to ask former students about their educational experience.

CEPR programs are recognized for producing graduates who are well-prepared to uphold the highest standards of ethics, strategy and leadership in public relations. The college joins an elite group of universities around the world that have earned the designation.
