CoJMC announces 2025 Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards

Nebraska’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications is proud to announce the faculty and staff excellence award-winners for the 2025 academic year. This year’s winners were recognized for their exceptional achievements in teaching, research, industry or community engagement, student support or advocacy, staff excellence, inclusive excellence and going above and beyond expectations. 

Award recipients were selected by a committee of three current students and three alumni. The student members included Rubi Hernandez Ochoa, a junior advertising and public relations major from Harvard, Nebraska; Jay Quemado, a May 2025 graduate from El Paso, Texas and Jodi Soptic, a senior journalism and advertising and public relations double major from Kansas City, Kansas. The alumni members included LeAnne Bugay (‘24), assistant account executive, Reniscow and Associates; Marissa Kraus (‘23), sports reporter, The Colorado Spring Gazette and Lance Vie (‘24), producer/director of live events, Stanford University. 

The 2025 faculty and staff award winners are: 

Excellence in Teaching Award: Alan Eno, associate professor of practice

“We selected Alan due to how seamlessly he manages his busy schedule while providing outstanding real-world education to his students.”

 

Excellence in Research/Creative Activity Award: Barney McCoy, Gilbert and Martha Hitchcock Professor

“We selected Barney for his creative work as a producer in the documentary "Running Towards the Fire - A War Correspondent's Story." His documentary has garnered acclaim at film festivals around the world that reflect highly on the college. He is quick to share accolades with the CoJMC faculty, staff, and student colleagues.”

 

Excellence in Industry or Community Engagement: Jessica Walsh, assistant professor

“We selected Jessica Walsh for this award for her work and impact that goes beyond the university. Her work focuses on engaging with community members to create a real-world impact. She shows her hard work in improving journalism and engagement with communities.”

 

Excellence in Student Support or Advocacy: Adam Wagler, associate dean for academic programs and associate professor

Staff Excellence Award: Karez Hassan, academic advisor

“Karez has shown unwavering support for students on their journey academically. She serves as a source of encouragement and is dedicated to fostering a welcoming environment. She serves as both a dependable mentor to students and a valued colleague.”

 

Inclusive Excellence Award: Zac Franzen, alumni relations and events coordinator

Friend of the College Award: Alek Timm

“We selected Alek for his consistent engagement with the CoJMC since his graduation. He has returned to campus as a quest speaker and has gone above and beyond to engage with students. He credits UNL for his impressive career and works to make time for students who desire a career in golf media.”

 

To Infinity and Beyond Award: Natalie Becerra, career development specialist

“We selected Natalie for this award due to her work to develop professional skills in students through her coaching and teaching. As a UNL alumn, Natalie works hard to redefine her professional development curriculum to keep up with student needs and best support them in their careers. She is passionate to support staff and their development.”

Dean’s Pretty Awesome Award: Betsy Emmons, associate professor

Dean Shari Veil selected Betsy Emmons to receive the Dean’s Pretty Awesome Award. The Dean's Pretty Awesome Award is a special recognition presented by the Dean to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to the CoJMC community. 

The awards were presented at the CoJMC Family Reunion on May 7, 2025.
