Each month, CoJMC community members are honored for going above and beyond in their contributions to the college with nominations for Professor of the Month and Student of the Month.
These awards recognize the hard work and dedication of faculty and students, spotlighting excellence in teaching and academic achievement.
All award-winners are nominated through the college's Kudos program, a peer-to-peer recognition initiative, and members of the CoJMC Student Advisory Board select the monthly winners.
The SAB announced the following award-winners for the summer, August and September:
September Student of the Month
Izzy Lewis
Izzy Lewis is a sophomore journalism, sports media and communication and advertising and public relations triple major from Hickman, Nebraska. At the Daily Nebraskan, she’s a photographer and the assistant culture editor and at the CoJMC, she serves as an ambassador, sharing her experiences at Andersen Hall and giving tours to prospective students. Lewis is also an editor for the Unlimited Sports Experience Lab and the assistant speech coach at her alma mater, Norris High School.
“School's been back for less than a month and Izzy is already working super hard. As an editor for Unlimited Sports, Izzy's been on the front lines of making sure students' stories are published to the website on time, and that they're the best they can be. Izzy also balances being an editor and photographer for the Daily Nebraskan, stepping up to take video at the football game without any prior experience. On top of all that, Izzy is a triple major, and always does everything to the best of her ability and with a smile on her face!”
September Professor of the Month
Matt Waite, Professor of Practice, Journalism
“Matt shared his AI expertise on a project I’ve been working on this afternoon, and together we may have found a way to save hundreds of staff hours. I’m grateful for his knowledge, his willingness to jump in, and, of course, his constant sarcasm and wit that make the work even more enjoyable.”

Shari Veil, Jane T. Olson Endowed Dean, Professor
“This week was incredibly hard on everyone. We heard difficult things and know the path ahead will be filled with tough decisions and challenges. Despite these trying times, Shari’s leadership never wavers. She leads with transparency, compassion and a tireless dedication to our college and its people, reminding us that even in the hardest moments, we are moving forward together. Summer Professor of the Month
Elle Stecher, Assistant Professor of Practice, Advertising and Public Relations
“Elle is a gift to our college. She brings such enthusiasm and joy to everything she does. Her friend's daughter will be a freshman at UNL this coming fall. When talking with her, Elle thought she would be a good fit for our college even though she was declaring a major in another college. She came to campus with her friend and daughter arranged a your with Alex and advising appointment with me. We now have another ADPR major! Glad Elle is on our team!!!”
