The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Journalism and Mass Communications won 6 awards—including one Best of Show—at the 2024 Broadcast Education Association’s On-Location Creative Works Competition.
May 2024 graduate Connor Clark of Lake Bluff, Illinois won Best of Show in the Sports Competition—Sports Program category for “Men's Basketball vs. Michigan State.”
Students Marissa Lindemann and Olivia Reed won an Award of Excellence in the Documentary Competition for “On the Border: Sherry Wounded Foot’s Story.” Lindemann is a junior broadcasting and journalism double from Des Moines, Iowa and Reed is a junior broadcasting major from Rancho Murieta, California.
Katie Lockyear, a May 2024 graduate from Lenexa, Kansas, also won an Award of Excellence in the Documentary Competition for “The Golden Barber.”
In the News Competition, senior Hayden Hauge of Shelton, Nebraska and senior Mackenzie Noble of West Dundee, Illinois won an Award of Excellence in the News Program category for “Nebraska Nightly.” Hauge is a broadcasting, journalism, English and film studies quadruple major and Noble is a broadcasting major.
Dec. 2023 graduate Emerson McClure of Yankton, South Dakota won an Award of Excellence in the News Story category for “Lincoln’s Local Food Supply Plan.”
Barney McCoy, Gilbert and Martha Hitchcock Professor, won a Faculty Award of Excellence in the Documentary Competition for his documentary “Running Towards the Fire – A War Correspondent’s Story.”
Winners will be recognized at this year’s BEA On-Location conference at Clark Atlanta University from Oct. 4-6. The conference focuses on professional development, with hands-on training sessions and is an opportunity to promote academic scholarship through research sessions and creative competitions.
The On-Location Creative Works Competition is an opportunity for full-time faculty and students to showcase their creative scholarship. Faculty submit work they’ve completed in the past two years to be peer reviewed and students submit work they’ve completed during the past academic year to be judged by industry professionals and faculty.
