Two College of Journalism and Mass Communications staff members were honored with Staff Senate Awards at the 2025 Staff Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, July 23. Career Development Specialist Natalie Becerra won the Professional Development Award and Director of Business and Operations Haley Hamel won the Staff Advocacy Award.
Becerra was nominated by CoJMC staff members Alisa Smith, director of advising and Zac Franzen, alumni relations and events coordinator.
“Natalie works tirelessly to support our college community,” Smith said. “She is constantly trying new ideas to meet our students where they are at and she inspires her colleagues to do the same.”
The Professional Development Award is awarded to a staff member who prioritizes professional development in the workplace and beyond. Becerra was recognized for her commitment to personal professional development and the professional development of her students, colleagues and peers.
"Natalie has a genuine passion for professional development,” Franzen said. “She understands that career preparation is not just about academic achievement and works to provide her community with the tools, experiences and connections they need to succeed in their endeavors.”
Hamel was nominated for the Staff Advocacy Award by Smith and by CoJMC Administrative Coordinator Tiffany Groteluschen.
“Haley’s advocacy extends beyond just words—she actively champions our best interests, ensuring that our voices are heard and our contributions are recognized,” Groteluschen said. “She cultivates an environment where collaboration, respect and appreciation are at the forefront. Through her leadership, staff feel not only supported in their roles but also connected as part of a cohesive and motivated team.”
The Staff Advocacy Award recipient is honored for their commitment to consistently encouraging and advocating for staff excellence by contributing to the advancement and well-being of staff. With this award, Hamel is being recognized as a leader who views staff members as valuable and whose interactions within the university foster a positive workplace culture.
“Haley makes our college run,” Smith said. “She is extremely knowledgeable, spends countless hours taking care of our staff and puts our needs into every decision that is made. In my 25 years of working in higher education, I have never felt this supported by an administrator.”
