Broadcasting Huskers from Nebraska’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications were named finalists for seven national audio awards in the Broadcast Education Association and College Broadcasters Inc. On-Location Creative Competition. Each award category has four finalists from student media outlets nationwide.
Junior journalism and sports media double major Teddy Ball of Alvo, Nebraska, was named a finalist in Best Feature News Reporting for “Nebraska's Prison Overcrowding: The State’s Unsolved Problem,” and May 2025 graduate Macy Byars of Omaha was named a finalist in Best Public Service Announcement for “Play LCM, Lincoln Children’s Museum.”
The following Huskers were named finalists in two categories, Best Regularly Scheduled Entertainment Program for “Paranormal Inactivity-Log 3: The Case of the Entrapped Alien” and Best Podcast for “Paranormal Inactivity-Log 2: The Phantom of the Bell Tower:”
- Jakob Fisher, senior broadcasting major from North Platte, Nebraska
- Hayden Hauge, senior broadcasting, journalism, English and film studies quadruple major from Shelton, Nebraska
- Grace Koch, junior broadcasting and advertising and public relations double major from Norfolk, Nebraska
- Katie Mulloy, sophomore emerging media arts major from Olathe, Kansas
May 2025 graduate Angelina Pattavina of Sidney, Nebraska, was also named a finalist in Best Regularly Scheduled Entertainment Program for “Through The Eras – Midnights,” and junior sports media major Arden Louchheim of Park City, Utah, was named a finalist in Best Sports Reporting for “Japan's Takahashi finds golf home at Nebraska.”
In Best Sports Play-By-Play, Harmon Johnsen of Sutherland, Nebraska and Jacob Schrantz of Orchard Park, New York, were named finalists with “UNL Men’s Basketball 11-17-24 UNL vs. St. Mary’s, November 17, 2024.” Johnsen is a junior broadcasting and sports media double major and Schrantz is a May 2025 graduate.
Winners will be recognized on Oct. 25, during this year’s CBI National Student Electronic Media Convention and BEA On-Location Conference in Denver, Colorado. The conference promotes academic scholarship through research and creative work competitions, hands-on training sessions and opportunities for professional development.
