The Experience Lab
Work with faculty liaisons and professional mentors to build your academic skill set and explore your professional interests in one of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications (CoJMC) media outlets. There are numerous opportunities to gain experience in your field, like reporting stories or helping produce for the student-run statewide newswires.
Global Eyewitness
Through Global Eyewitness, you’ll have the opportunity to travel and develop compelling stories that connect problems with possibilities. Previous locations include the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Kenya, Mongolia and South Africa.
Learning Communities
In CoJMC’s two learning communities, Media Smarts and Press Box, students live together and learn together as they prepare for the future through academic, social and professional activities, events and media field trips to learn from professionals in the industry.
Notable Courses
Communication Design Modules (JOMC 130-134)
A module-based series of classes centered around Adobe Creative Suite. These modules give students hands-on experience through audio, layout, mobile, photo, typography and video assignments.
Fundamentals of Editing and Reporting I & II (JOUR 200A & 200B)
Fundamentals of AP Style and reporting, writing and editing for news media in print, digital and broadcast. Focus on in-depth reporting, writing and editing.
Editing for Digital Media (JOUR 303)
Refining and editing of news and feature stories for print and online media. Issues of ethics and news-editing.
Solutions Journalism: Covering Responses to Social Problems (JOUR 305)
Study the origins, tenets and impact of solutions journalism and learn how to create news stories that are rigorously reported and compellingly written.
Data Journalism (JOUR 307)
News reporting using data and analysis. Techniques for analysis and skills for writing complex stories.
Nebraska Mosaic (JOUR 346)
Practice journalism skills by reporting on stories focused on diversity and inclusion.

Apply to work at the Daily Nebraskan, the independent student newspaper. Write for the culture, news, opinion or sports sections of the paper or join the multimedia or sales teams.
Omaha World-Herald Fellowship
Join the Fellowship program with the Omaha World-Herald to cover stories with the largest newspaper in the state and build upon your journalistic experience.
Election Coverage
Host a debate between candidates or participate in events such as Election Night Coverage, where there are a variety of journalistic and media-focused projects.
Featured Faculty
Shoun Hill, Assistant Professor of Practice
Shoun has been a photographer for over 15 years, having worked at newspapers in Louisville, K.Y., Minneapolis, Jackson, Tenn., Memphis and Orlando before landing at The Associated Press in New York. He has worked on numerous long-term projects during that time. At the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, he teaches photography and is one of the faculty leads for the Global Eyewitness Program.
Academics & Experiential Learning
- The checkout room in Andersen Hall has any type of equipment you need to create media for class or personal projects, from various types of cameras and lighting equipment to audio recorders and production mixers.
Career Preparedness
- An in-house Career Development Specialist is available to help you with career preparedness. Discuss internships, careers, resumes, cover letters and even practice with mock interviews.
- Most students end their collegiate careers with multiple jobs and internships under their belts.
