Kirkpatrick selected for Research Development Fellows program
Ciera Kirkpatrick, assistant professor of advertising and public relations, was selected Oct. 15 to participate in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Research Development Fellows Program designed to provide early-career faculty with the information, resources and approaches necessary to position themselves for success in securing external funding for their research, scholarship and creative activity.
TenHulzen wins top presentation at Nebraska Research Days
Senior advertising and public relations major Bre TenHulzen won top CoJMC presentation for her honors thesis “Advertising During the COVID-19 Global Pandemic: The Rise of Influencer Marketing in a Recession” at Nebraska Research Days.
Wang receives grant to support First Amendment Campaign
Bryan Wang, an associate professor of advertising and public relations, received a grant from Middle Tennessee State University to support a student-led campaign to advocate for free speech on campus. The project will engage advanced advertising and public relations students in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
Jones and Yan receive grant for loneliness study
Associate Professors Valerie Jones and Changmin Yan received a pilot grant from the 2021 Great Plains IDeA Center. The grant supported a project using voice assistants, such as Google’s Alexa, to reduce lonliness in the elderly. Walsh chosen for faculty success program
Jessica Fargen Walsh, an assistant professor of journalism, was chosen to participate in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity’s Faculty Success Program. This 12-week online program is designed to teach tenure-track and tenured faculty the skills to increase research and writing productivity while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Kirkpatrick wins research slam
Ciera Kirkpatrick, assistant professor of advertising and public relations, won the $1,000 first-place prize at the fourth annual Faculty Research and Creative Activity Slam for a presentation on her research in designing communications to improve diversity in clinical trials.
Boling and Kirkpatrick selected for Kopenhaver Fellowship
Assistant Professors Kelli Boling and Ciera Kirkpatrick were selected for Kopenhaver Fellowships by the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication. The Kopenhaver Center’s mission is to empower women professionals and academics in communication to develop into visionaries and leaders.
Marron wins the Donna Allen Award for Feminist Advocacy
Professor of journalism Maria Marron was honored with the Donna Allen Award for Feminist Advocacy by the Commission on the Status of Women, during the annual (virtual) convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC). Marron received the award for her commitment to feminist-based research as evident in her two recent books, Misogyny and Media in the Age of Trump (2019) and Misogyny across Global Media (2021).
Everding awarded a Hitchcock Fellowship
Mia Everding, a master’s student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications specializing in professional journalism, was awarded a Hitchcock Fellowship to support a documentary project exploring the lives of Latino immigrants in the Fremont community.

Valerie Jones received a grant from the Nebraska Governance and Technology Center to support the Public Insight Lab, a research collaboration using cutting-edge technology to conduct social media reseach.
Wang received NGTC grant
