Two students from the UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications served as emcees for an event at the Sheldon Museum of Art.

CoJMC seniors Jill Lamkins and Hannah-Kate Kinney announced the winners at the UNL Center for Entrepreneurship’s New Venture Competition on April 6. The New Venture Competition is a celebration of entrepreneurial learning and competition. As part of the competition, students pitch their business plans to judges from the Lincoln and Omaha business community and field questions on current traction, monetization strategies, risky assumptions and more. Lamkins and Kinney announced recipients of $50,000 as part of the event.

The New Venture Competition runs in a bracket or knockout format. Teams advance through two preliminary rounds. Following elimination rounds, four teams compete against each other for the grand prize. One grand prize of $15,000, along with additional cash prizes, is awarded during the Networking and Awards Reception. The top four have opportunities for further investment of up to $25,000 from the Husker Venture Fund.

The event judges included John Wirtz, co-founder Hudl, Rebecca Pearson, former CMO, owner at 93.7 The Ticket, Vern Powers, founder and former Hastings mayor, Katie Pocras, founder, Chakraborty Sourabh, founder, and Larry Hupka, partner @PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Lamkins is a senior broadcasting and sports media and communication double major from Apple Valley, Minnesota. Kinney is a broadcasting, journalism and advertising and public relations triple major from Omaha.
