Dean's Update: October 2023

Tuesday, October 24, 2023 - 9:30am

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I am delighted to announce that I will be getting a new title. Jane Tenhulzen Olson (’64) and her husband, Ron, have made a $2 million gift commitment to establish the Jane T. Olson Endowed Deanship in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. I am honored to be the inaugural recipient of the deanship and carry on Jane’s legacy to the next generation. Read more about Jane’s incredible life journey and the impact this gift will have on the future of our college.

I look forward to celebrating with you this Friday at the CoJMC Homecoming Party. RSVP now to join 150+ of your old professors, classmates and friends in Andersen Hall for a night of food, drink, memories and merriment. Get caught up on alumni Kelly Ann Scott (’98), Dominique Kelley (’12), LaSharah Bunting (’00) and our Huskers on the Move before the party.

Assistant Professors Jessica Fargen Walsh and Ciera Kirkpatrick are making big moves on the research front to advance inclusive writing and increase cancer screenings. If you are a current or former journalist or journalism educator, we could use your help with a research project. Please consider completing this survey from the Reynolds Journalism Institute regarding what changes newsrooms and journalism schools could make to help prevent professional burnout. Results will be shared back with the college so we can better prepare and support future journalists.

Earlier this month we welcomed to campus 675 future journalists from 45 Nebraska schools for the Nebraska High School Press Association Convention. From accessing public records to sports photography, students had the opportunity to attend 32 media-related sessions and get recognized for their work over the last year at the annual awards competition.

This newsletter also features stories about our superstar students directing sports for KRNU, heading up public relations for Jacht, covering Democracy Day and joining the New York Times Corps and fall 2023 Jacht crew.

Finally, check out these recruiting videos from CoJMC seniors Hannah-Kate Kinney (’24) and Jacob Vanderford (’24) about why they chose Nebraska. If they make you a little misty-eyed, I expect to see you at the Homecoming Party this Friday.

Go Big Red!

Shari
