Two University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications students placed in the top 20 in the Hearst Photojournalism I– News and Features Competition.
Senior Kenneth Ferriera of Cheyenne, WY, tied for 12th place in the Photo I competition and senior Elsie Stormberg of Omaha placed 14th. Both Ferriera and Stormberg are journalism majors at the CoJMC. The photo submissions were a mix of news, sports and features photos.
Stormberg is the senior video/photo editor at the Daily Nebraskan. Ferriera is a photography fellow with the Omaha World-Herald. Both have attended Global Eyewitness trips with the CoJMC.
“Ken and Elsie are two hard-working students,” photojournalism professor Bruce Thorson said. “Over the last couple of years their skill and talent have emerged. They will become successful photojournalists in whatever career path they choose.”
The photojournalism judges are Carolyn Cole, foreign national photo correspondent, The Los Angeles Times, California; Mark Morris, independent visual consultant, California; Luis Rios, director of photography, San Antonio Express-News, Texas.
The 60th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program added photojournalism to the competitions in 1970. The program also includes five writing, one radio, two television and four multimedia competitions offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends.
104 universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
