The College of Journalism and Mass Communications is one of the college partners for the new “#NILbraska” program. The Nebraska Athletics department introduced #NILbraska as a three-part initiative to help student-athletes gain Name, Image and Likeness experience.

Professor of advertising and public relations and sports media and communication Frauke Hachtmann is teaching the one-credit pop-up course “Branding Yourself in Today’s Market.”

In this course students learn how to convey their knowledge, skills and abilities to prospective employers to stand out from the crowd. Students will also leverage relevant social media platforms and other online portfolio tools to help them reframe how to approach their personal brand.

Hachtmann is excited that student-athletes are able to monetize their Name, Image and Likeness because back when she played tennis for the University from 1991-1995, there weren’t any opportunities like this, especially because she was an international student-athlete.

“Even though student-athletes have only been able to profit off their Name, Image and Likeness since July 1 of this year, we’re already seeing Nebraska athletes find success,” Hachtmann said.

For example, Husker volleyball player and integrated media and communications graduate student Lexi Sun launched her own clothing line this July.

Universities across the country are launching classes and programs to help their student-athletes monetize their Name, Image and Likeness, the difference with the University of Nebraska is that these classes are open to all university students.

“These classes aren’t just for student-athletes, they’re for students who freelance or have their own business,” Hachtmann said, “There are a lot of students in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications who are photographers, graphic designers, etc. that want to monetize their skills and these classes are a great place to start.”
