The Midwest Broadcast Journalism Association featured five College of Journalism and Mass Communication groups or individuals as finalists for the Eric Sevareid Awards. The awards announced in April saw the CoJMC receive three First Place and two Award of Merit honors.

Recognition in the Sevareid Awards competition is an honor because it includes students and professionals from the best broadcast outlets and journalism programs in Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin all competing against each other.

The Star City News and Mosaic groups are part of CoJMC classes. The Mosaic project is an ongoing effort to highlight the vibrant art and experiences of immigrants and refugees in Lincoln. The work for the Mosaic project can be seen at http://mosaic.cojmc.webfactional.com/in-depth-projects/.

“As readers can see from the project, the students worked hard to create meaningful and interesting multimedia stories about refugee and immigrant artists who often create their art in the shadows and out of the public eye. The students wanted to tell the stories of these artists and bring attention to their art and their cultures; winning an award was most likely the last thing on their minds. But it is fulfilling for them to be recognized by professionals for their hard work and dedication to their journalism,” said Michelle Carr Hassler about the Mosaic work.

The Eric Sevareid Awards are named for the North Dakota-born and University of Minnesota-educated journalist best known for his work as a correspondent for CBS Radio and Television. Each year, the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association presents awards to the best work done by broadcast news operations and journalists working in small, medium and large markets in a six-state region on radio, television and online. A distinguished panel of judges is made up of journalists and educators who live outside of Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas, Iowa and Nebraska to help ensure impartiality.
