CoJMC Students Attend National Sports Media Conference with Fox Sports UTuesday, July 9, 2019 - 8:00am
Fox Sports University invited three UNL CoJMC students to attend the National Sports Media Conference in North Carolina. Amanda Acevedo, Tommy Dalton and Ryland Pappas were part of the Spring Fox Sports U class taught by professor Frauke Hachtmann. The students’ work promoting Fox Deportes was chosen by the organization and garnered an invitation to the conference.
The National Sports Media Conference provided a rare opportunity for Acevedo, Dalton and Pappas to meet and learn from top sports media professionals. Sessions at the conference provided career and industry insights, including the stories of what it took to start a career. The students gained a clearer picture of the versatility and hard work it takes to have a career in sports media.
A key highlight for the students, three of 16 chosen by Fox Sports, was not only hearing from but getting to meet leaders in the industry such as Bob Ryan, Doris Burke, Tony Kornheiser, Bob Ley, Jessica Gagne and Mike “Doc” Emrick.
Acevado said meeting professions like Emrick, who was inducted into the National Sports Media Hall of Fame, and Gagney, Maine’s Sportscaster of the year, was a chance to get advice about her “soon-to-be career in sports broadcasting.”
Acevado’s advises her CoJMC peers to give your best to every course and assignment “because you never know who is watching and what will lead you to some amazing opportunities.” She is thankful her team’s hard work and effort were noticed and for the experience of attending the National Sports Media Conference.
Fox Sports University strives to cultivate future minds through partnership with key universities. The program partners a Fox Sports Media Group business with a class to provide an opportunity for students to create a solution for a real-world marketing, research, technology or strategy challenge.
