CoJMC brings home SPJ and Sevareid journalism awards

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) has recognized the best college journalism students in Region 7 with 2017 Mark of Excellence (MOE) Awards. The awards ceremony was held in Ames, Iowa, on April 14.

The following CoJMC students were recognized:

Radio News Reporting

Finalist: Bike safety concerns in Lincoln, Nebraska - Holly Kell, junior broadcasting and journalism major

Television General News Reporting

Winner: Growth threatens fire safety in parts of Lincoln - Kellan Heavican, senior broadcasting major

Television In-Depth Reporting

Winner: DACA uncertainty in Crete, Nebraska - Bree Samani, senior broadcasting, journalism and advertising and public relations major

Best All-Around Television Newscast

Finalist: Star City News - Staff of LNKTV at the CoJMC

Online News Reporting

Winner: Lincoln nonprofit provides training, hope to former inmates - Lauren Brown-Hulme, senior journalism and political science major

Online Feature Reporting

Winner: Fathers and sons - by Marcella Mercer, senior journalism major, and Emily McMinn, senior advertising and public relations and journalism major

Online In-Depth Reporting

Winner: Refuge on the prairie: Lincoln's story of resettlement - by staff of Nebraska Mosaic at the CoJMC

Finalist: From endless pines to oil mines - Hannah Trull, junior journalism and Spanish major

Best Independent Online Student Publication

Finalist: Nebraska Mosaic - by staff of Nebraska Mosaic at the CoJMC

SPJ’s Region 7 comprises Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Honorees received award certificates at the Region 7 Conference. First-place winners will compete at the national level among other regional MOE winners from the 12 SPJ regions across the United States.

The CoJMC also had several recipients of Eric Sevareid Awards in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last weekend from the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association. The winners include:

Sports Reporting: Kellan Heavican, 1st place

Sports Play-by-Play: Kellan Heavican, Award of Merit

Hard Feature News: Bree Samani, 1st place

Individual Multimedia Storytelling: Nela Krawiecová,1st place

Individual Multimedia Storytelling: Lauren Brown-Hulme, Award of Merit

General TV News Reporting: Cassidy Adolf, 1st place

TV Newscast: Star City News students, Tommy Rezac, Lianna Prill, Seth Korte, Joe Harris, Anthony Ainslie, Lucas Bond, Christian Folsom, Reid Hunsaker, Matt Rigby - Award of Merit

The Eric Sevareid Awards are named for the North Dakota-born and University of Minnesota-educated journalist best known for his work as a correspondent for CBS Radio and Television.

Each year, the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association presents awards to the best work done by broadcast news operations and and journalists working in small, medium and large markets in a six-state region on radio, television and online. A distinguished panel of judges is made up of journalists and educators who live outside of Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas, Iowa and Nebraska to help ensure impartiality.
