Burge announces retirement

On Monday, April 2, 2018, Trudy Burge, assistant professor of practice and technical writing coordinator, announced her retirement from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications (CoJMC). Her final day with the college will be May 11, 2018.

“Trudy has provided consistent strength and leadership to our technical writing program,” said Interim Dean Amy Struthers. “Students from throughout the university have benefited from her work and dedication.”

Burge has a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in education from the College of William and Mary. She began teaching writing at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1983. In 2006, she took over coordination of business and technical writing program in CoJMC, which offers beginning and intermediate writing courses to students across University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

During her time at the university, Burge has been involved in a number of important initiatives related to improving learning outcomes for students. She served on the committee that introduced Achievement Centered Education (ACE) to the university and became one of the ACE course facilitators for the college. She served on focus groups through the Faculty Leadership for Writing Initiative, participated in the Program Excellence through Assessment Research and Learning (PEARL), and participated in the Peer Review of Teaching project.

“Trudy is a true servant of education,” said Struthers. “Her leadership has helped countless students master writing, a skill that will serve them throughout their lives.”
