Business & Technical Communications

This will be my 33rd year teaching business writing courses at UNL.

For the past 25 years, I have been executive director of the Family Violence Council in Lincoln. FVC coordinates efforts in Lancaster County to stop domestic and sexual abuse. I staff our community’s coordinated response teams for domestic violence and sexual assault, write grants on behalf of coordinated response partners, and provide training about abusive men’s behavior among other activities. I have written more than $18 million in successful grant applications on behalf of our partners.

I’m creating a new coordinated response to support development of a special juvenile court for child abuse cases co-occurring with domestic abuse. I maintain a data base on all domestic violence and sexual crimes and requests for protection orders and publish reports on the data base. I also maintain a database for the Lincoln Threat Advisory Team, of which I am a member. This team looks at high-risk cases where an individual appears to be targeting another individual or group for homicide.

Prior to my current position, I was a newspaper editor with the Lincoln Journal for 25 years. I served at various times as Managing Editor, City Editor and Regional Editor. Early in my career I was Assistant Sports Editor. I have served on the board of directors of a several not-for-profit organizations. I was president of the board of directors of Leadership Lincoln, the Capital Humane Society and Family Services. I was the first male asked to serve on the board of directors of the Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence.

For the past 5 years, I have also taught a graduate level Social Work regarding community violence for the University of Nebraska at Omaha on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus. I received MBA and BA degrees from UNL. I am a member of the Nebraska Softball Hall of Fame and the Lincoln Bowling Hall of Fame.
