Busy Week

May 28-31, 2007
Spencer Schubert, NTV , Kearney, Nebraska

This last week was definitely my busiest of the summer internship here at NTV. This was my last week of training as I now prepare to become a photographer/reporter for the station.

Throughout the week I did many different things. On Monday, I traveled with the main female anchor Colleen Williams on the Road Less Traveled again. This is actually going to be more of a full-time job for me as well. Colleen and I will now be going to each new town together EVERY week for the rest of the summer.

She and sports anchor Josh Jelden collaborated and thought it would be neat if I was able to do a little segment of my own on these trips. Since I am a sports intern, they thought I could find a sports angle from every town we go to and report on that for the 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. shows.

This would require me to do live stand-ups and voice-overs for these particular pieces. I am extremely excited to get started on that specific task. Next Monday will be one more practice week and then I will be officially on air with some material.

On Tuesday, I shot some baseball games for sports, and went back and cut the video in time for the 10:00 p.m. newscast. This was very similar to what I did the rest of the week, except for Thursday.

Thursday night was when plenty of storms and tornado's rolled through the central parts of Nebraska and north central Kansas. A tornado actually touched down in a town called Smith Center in Kansas, and I was asked to fly to the scene, get some shots and an interview, and get back before the 10:00 p.m. show so the stuff could air.

The fun part: I had 2 1/2 hours to do it. Even better: The drive to get there was a little over an hour.

To say the least, it was a CRUNCH, but I was able to make it down and back. I filmed all of my shots in a total of 20 minutes, with the help of a man in town that offered to show me where all the damage had been.

I got back to the station and was able to edit a VO in the 10 minutes I had before air. They ended up using my work to open the show. It was definitely a cool experience.

My name is Spencer Schubert, and I am going to be a junior double-major in Broadcasting and News-Editorial. During the school year, I have written for the DN, co-hosted a show on ESPN Radio for two-thirds of the year, and also worked for a TV Station based out of Kearney. I love sports and everything about it, and that is what my internship will be this year. I will be interning as a sports reporter for NTV out of Kearney. Hope to hear from you all this summer!
