I got to be on the news!

June 28, 2007
Riana Perez, 7News, Denver, CO.

Hello there. Sorry, that it has been a little while since I last blogged. I have been busy, believe it or not. Well, the last week and a half has gone well.

On Tuesday of last week I made my major debut.......I was on the news! Well, kind of. I spent most of the day in the newsroom logging tape for my packages and they broadcast live from the newsroom...and guess who was behind the anchor during the whole newscast? Yes, that would be me. I didn't even realize until, I watched the news that night and noticed myself just sitting at my computer typing away. There you have it...I'm now famous in Denver.

On Friday, I went out with Coby a photographer. We were mainly just taping VSOTs. It was a nice change of pace to go out with a photographer and not have the pressure of a deadline.

We originally went to Boulder for bad weather, then found that there was none. Then we heard on the scanners that there was some kind of death in Boulder. So, we called it in and had some extra time and we decided to go check it out. It ended up being a suicide...it is a rule of thumb that most news stations don't cover suicides, so we didn't.

Then we headed over to the Court House to get an interview. When we were on our way home we got a call from the station to tell us one of the banks in Boulder had flooded, so we turned around and got that story. All is all, it was a little bit more of a low key day, it was nice to just go around and shoot video.

On Monday of this week I started a second internship at Cerebral Palsy of Denver. Through a friend I was able to meet the CEO of the company and I got started talking to her and to make a long story short I'm their summer intern.

The company just moved into a new beautiful building. So, I'm in charge of planning their open house in September.

Basically, I'm archiving all 60 years of history with the company. It has been super neat. I have been able to learn a lot about CP and how they raise money. This is a perfect job for me because I'm the philanthropy chair for the Innocents Society and we are in charge of creating a new philanthropy every year, so I'm hoping this experience will help me in my duties in the year to come. So, far I will be working the three days a week. The days that I don't intern.

Then on Tuesday of this week I headed to Fort Collins, CO with Lance Hernandez. We were covering a story about a little boy who was bitten by a rattle snake.

It turned out to be a very interesting story. The sad thing though was that we were kind of rushed...we ended up having about six interviews for a 1:05 story, but that is how news works.

I was able to shoot a standup and I feel more confident that I'm improving. I would say that when I first started shooting them, I was a little rusty, but I think that I'm getting the hang of them. I'm by no means a "polished reporter" yet, but I feel like I'm making some progress.

For some reason I have a really hard time at "hitting" the right words. With a little coaching from the photographer and Lance I was able to get something that we think will work.

Overall, the days have been great! I was looking at the calendar and realized that I have a little over a month left. Crazy.

Until next time
