The weeks are flying by!

June 2 , 2007

The weeks are flying by! I can't believe that it is already June. Crazy. Well, week three is done and it went well. Both days I was able to go out with Russell a dayside reporter.

On Tuesday we went back to Greeley, CO for a short story on immigration. This was kind of a controversial story, so we had to make sure that we got both sides, while reporting equally to both sides.

The day was a little bit more stressful than the others. It was just one of those days. We got a late start to the day and didn't get into Greeley until 1:00 p.m. and we had to go on live at 4:00 p.m. In addition it poured rain all day.

To make a long story short, the photographer was editing up until 3:50 p.m. and we did make it to go live at 4:00 p.m.

I felt that this day just goes to show that they are not all going to be easy. For the sake of stress I just hung out. I tried to stay out of the way. I do think that it is important for me to see both the easy and hard days...it gives me a better taste of the business.

On Friday, we headed to Nederthlands. This is a city located by Boulder. It is a outdoors town. A boy and his friends were scrambling (rock climbing without proper equipment) and he fell off the cliff into the river. He was missing, when we got there his body was found and confirmed dead.

He fell 200 yards. They weren't sure if his death was from the fall or the water. The water has been higher than normal due to all of the snow and rain. There was not too much to say besides he didn't make it. One of the worst parts was he was only 17. We got to talk to the rescue team and interview them. Very sad. Then we went live at 5:00.

Overall, this day went a little bit smoother, except the windy roads up to the mountains. The drive was beautiful. The mountains are gorgeous, plus everything is more green than normal due to all the snow and rain CO has gotten.

This week proved to me that some days are easier than others and that is to be expected. I'm very happy that I was able to go out with a reporter both days.

If anything, I'm getting a better grasp of what a tease should look like and live shots. For the reason that each reporter goes live on location they don't have stand-ups in their packages, so I'm learning the format behind this kind of newscast. It's also somewhat of a challenge to make the live shot interactive and look comfortable. The anchor also asks questions, so they have to come across sounding natural.

On a side bar, I got to meet a friend from Lincoln this week and we went to a Rockies baseball game. It was so much fun to see someone from "home." Well, I guess that is all...until next week!
