June 2013 — Colby Dolan, of Minden, Neb., and Adam Kroft, of Lincolnshire, Ill., were awarded two new scholarships for students with summer 2013 internships. Dolan and Kroft are studying advertising and public relations in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. 

Dolan was awarded a $2,500 J. Steve Davis Scholarship for students with an internship in a “Top 25” market and needs financial support for living expenses. He will begin a production internship with Colle + McVoy of Minneapolis in June. 

Kroft was awarded a $1,000 Kris Malkoski Scholarship for students who have taken a pro bono internship and needs financial support in order to make it more affordable. Kroft was selected for the junior executive internship program with The San Jose Group in the greater Chicago area. 

“We are grateful that our alumni are supporting students as they pursue limitless internship opportunities,” said UNL advertising and public relations sequence head Frauke Hachtmann. “Internships enhance students’ knowledge, competencies and experience related to their career goals.” 

Dolan, who is also majoring in broadcast production, has held internships as a social media strategist with the Lied Center for Performing Arts; account services internship with the minnow PROJECT; designer/videographer with Nebraska Global and video production specialist with HuskerVision. He is a member of Jacht Ad Lab, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications’ student advertising agency. This spring he created videos and did the creative for Jacht’s many clients. 

Kroft has held a marketing internship with the Husker Athletic Department; promoted attendance at University of Nebraska-Lincoln athletic events for The Iron N; served as an assistant manager of Woolenwear Co. of Prospect Heights, Ill.; is the chief executive officer and founder of Asterisk Advertising Boutique; and a campus branding agent intern with Axis of Awesome.


Davis is a 1967 graduate of UNL. Davis held key domestic and international assignments for the Benton & Bowles advertising agency from 1972-1985 in New York and Brussels. He left to create a creative boutique agency in New York, AltschillerReitzfeldDavis.  Following five years of steady growth, the firm was sold to Omnicom, the largest of the New York based global communications holding companies. Davis has held subsequent leadership positions including a six year presidency of J. Walter Thompson’s flagship office in Chicago beginning in 1991 and Chief Executive Officer positions for Young & Rubicam New York and the WellsBDDP headquarters in New York. Following the sale of WellsBDDP to Omnicom in 2000, he relocated to San Francisco to serve as the President of the Premier Retail Network (PRN). His investment in PRN sparked the desire to advise and fund other startups for equity positions. He thus founded and funded Giraffe Inc., in 2002 in San Francisco as a private equity consulting business. Giraffe continues to operate today. 


Malkoski, a 1983 graduate of UNL, is President North America at World Kitchen LLC. World Kitchen LLC develops, manufactures, markets, and distributes kitchen, storage, and dining solutions for homes in the United States, the Asia-Pacific and internationally. She served as vice president, general manager of Craftsman, the popular tool and hardware company. Malkoski has also served as executive vice president for Ubiquity Brands, a company that made branded and private label snack foods. She also founded and was president/COO of Pharmaceutical Corporation of America, a contract product management company for the Rx and OTC health care industry, which she sold to Publicis in 2002. Her career began at Procter and Gamble where she led the national launches of Aleve Pain Reliever, ThermaCare, Pert Plus and Metamucil. Malkoski is a recipient of Working Mother Magazine’s “Mothering That Works” Award as well as Advertising Age’s “Top 25 Women to Watch” and “Top 100 Marketers” awards, and has appeared on Good Morning America, Chicago ABC Evening News, NBC Radio and Lifetime Television.
