Dean Maria Marron

Maria Marron Dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications

Greetings,

Welcome to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications. I am delighted you’ve decided to look into our college. Let me tell you a little about all the exciting opportunities that await you here.

We have three majors: advertising/public relations, broadcasting and journalism.

As an advertising/public relations major, you can customize your program by focusing on an emphasis in account management, strategy, creative/interactive, public relations, sports and digital communication, while learning creative problem solving, critical thinking and strategic decision-making skills. Our ADPR students have the opportunity to dive into social media analytics, produce award-winning campaigns for real clients, work for our own student-run advertising agency and compete in national competitions, including the National Student Advertising Competition.

As a broadcasting major, you’ll learn the ins and outs of television, radio and digital audio and video production. You’ll help produce a live TV newscast or variety show and promote it through social media. You’ll have the opportunity to work on KRNU, the college’s radio station – broadcasting Husker games, reporting news and hosting an entertainment show. You’ll have the opportunity to enter the Hearst Intercollegiate Broadcast Competitions and the Radio Television Digital News Association.

As a journalism major, you’ll learn to create stories in words and images, how to use social media to report and how to produce multimedia stories. Your training might lead you to stories often ignored around the world - or in your own backyard. You’ll have the opportunity to work in international photojournalism, report on the Capitol, complete a fellowship at the Omaha World-Herald and compete in an array of competitions including the Hearst Intercollegiate Journalism Awards and the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards.

No matter what major you choose, we have a team of top-notch, award-winning faculty who are here to help you succeed and achieve your dreams. We have former managing editors of major dailies, directors of leading TV stations, advertising and PR professionals from top international agencies and even a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who are all dedicated to training our students to be prepared for the ever-changing world of media and communication.

It has never been a better time to be a part of the CoJMC. Our hands-on opportunities allow you to hone your skills and prepare you for the job market in one of the most dynamic industries in the world.

Our alumni have gone on to occupy positions such as managing editor of the Chicago Tribune, the senior Washington correspondent for CNN, senior vice president and director of research and analytics at FleishmanHillard, the creative director at Wieden+Kennedy, an agency known for its work for Nike, national news editor at The New York Times, social media analyst at Edelman, an international public relations agency.

The CoJMC has the highest job placement rate of any college at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, so here at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications we are ready to help you Start Here. Go Anywhere.
