The College of Journalism and Mass Communications is a nationally recognized and award-winning program where 950 undergraduate and graduate students practice hands-on broadcasting, journalism and advertising and public relations, guided by talented faculty members with top-flight professional experience. While no official rankings exist for journalism schools, we believe we’re among the nation’s best. And so do others:

  • We were chosen to join a prestigious consortium of the country’s top 12 journalism programs - the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education - and participate in the innovative News21 national reporting program.
  • In calling us a “national leader” in journalism education, an accreditation report praised our “impressive programs and initiatives at local, state, national and global levels” and our ability “to stay on the cutting edge in journalism and mass communications.”
  • Our students regularly win Hearst Journalism Awards (known as the Pulitzer Prizes for collegiate journalism.) They placed first in broadcast news and second overall among the 112 accredited journalism programs that competed last year. And we were the only school this decade to produce a national champion in three of four Hearst categories - writing, broadcasting and photography.
  • In November we created the first Drone Journalism Lab and now are establishing the first Center for Mobile Media.
  • The college is one of only seven chosen to host a residency for students who are part of the national Dow Jones News Fund editing internship program.
