Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communications
The M.A. degree in Journalism and Mass Communications is designed to build or enhance professional knowledge, skills and leadership in journalism and mass communications. The interdisciplinary curriculum combines up-to-date knowledge with practical application and individualized experience. Three of the four specializations are available for distance students. Students can choose from the following four areas of focus:
Integrated Media Communications (IMC) - NEW
The integrated media communications (IMC) specialization was designed for early-career professionals who want to enhance their skills in a rapidly changing media environment in the context of advertising, public relations. To accommodate the busy schedules of students in this specialization, it is entirely available online. This specialization is offered in conjunction with the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
The media studies specialization accommodates the needs of students who seek theoretical knowledge in journalism and mass communications. Students in this specialization will learn how to conduct scholarly research in preparation for an academic career. Students can customize the program of studies to fit their area of interest, including print, broadcast, and digital journalism, as well as advertising and public relations. This specialization is available on campus and online.
This interdisciplinary specialization in focuses on communication, culture, and organizations as well as marketing, advertising, public relations, promotional and communication strategies in domestic and international settings. It was designed for communication professionals who want advance their knowledge and learn new skills. This specialization is offered in conjunction with the UNL Marketing Department and the UNL Communication Studies Department and is only available on campus.
The professional journalism specialization was designed for working journalists who want to enhance their skills and knowledge in the digital media world. Instead of specializing in a particular medium, students will learn how to produce and analyze news and information across multiple platforms. This specialization is available on campus and online.
