The Omaha World-Herald Fellowship Program

The Omaha World-Herald Foundation sponsors a two-pronged “Real World” program for our students.

In the first prong, print and broadcast journalism students take a one-credit-hour course that brings a different member of the World-Herald staff to campus each week to talk about topics such as interviewing, reporting, editing, online work, covering tragedies and balancing work and career. The World-Herald reimburses the students for the one hour’s worth of tuition.

In the second prong, students who take the Real World course are eligible to apply for one of four fellowships the following semester. The fellows work out of the Lincoln bureau while taking no more than three other courses. They receive three hours of credit, which the World-Herald reimburses. The paper’s foundation also provides the students with a stipend for their work.

The Real World class began in fall 2008 and is offered every semester. The first batch of fellows worked with Leslie Reed at the Lincoln bureau in spring semester 2009, and the second batch is starting now.

Both the one-hour class and the fellowships provide a tremendous boost for our students and offer them a wonderful opportunity to learn about journalism in “the real world.”
