NEWS EDITOR

Department: Editorial
The news editor plans, directs, coordinates and controls the activities of the Editorial Department and is responsible for the efficient and effective use of resources to achieve company goals and minimize waste.
The news editor reports directly to the Operations Manager and Publisher. All news, sports and other editorial personnel report directly to the News Editor.
Requirements:
** Education-A bachelors degree in Journalism or related field
** A degree in management or similar training is preferred
** At least 2 years prior experience as an Editorial equivalent position in the newspaper publishing field is preferred.
** Licensing/Registration/Certification: Must have a valid driver's license.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
** Must be able to schedule operations and meet deadlines through the effective use of manpower, equipment and other managers and personnel. Must be able to associate and communicate well with others. Must be self-starting and focused on meeting company goals.
** Must be able to write well, interview, use a camera, be computer literate and have all basic journalism skills
JOB DESCRIPTION: MANAGING EDITOR
ENTERPRISE PUBLISHING, INC.

5.0 Responsibility-The incumbent in this position is responsible for:
5.1 Maximum benefit to the company through effective utilization of skills, knowledge and resources.
5.3 Meeting deadlines by devising, implementing and enforcing timelines necessary to meet deadlines
5.4 Overall content and production of the newspaper in cooperation with the Operations Manager
5.5 Ensuring that each functional unit works in-concert with all others to produce and distribute high quality publications on-time.
5.6 Minimization of waste of manpower and other resources. Responsible for staff editorial budget.
5.7 Encouraging employee feedback on operations
5.8 Ensuring that all subordinated have job descriptions or task and duty lists.
5.9 Training personnel in photography, writing, and other editorial related areas.
5.10 Developing standard procedures for tasks performed by more than one person.
5.11 Fostering an atmosphere of adherence to company policies
5.12 Total page layout and design of the paper in cooperation with Operations Manager
5.13 Recommendations for equipment, software or personnel needs.
5.14 Proper reporting of personnel matters within editorial department including all paperwork, reporting of sick days, vacation days and other time off.
5.15 Introductions and orientation of any new hires within editorial department.
5.16 Handle customer/reader comments and complaints related to editorial content.
5.17 Keep publisher informed of current or pending problems, controversies or conflicts.
6.0 Duties and Tasks
6.1 Story list, letters to editor and locally written columns to publisher and OM before each publication
6.3 Performs evaluations of all personnel within editorial department
6.4 Regular attendance at community events and activities for public relations and
reporting purposes. Attendance to be part of weekly report to publisher and OM.
6.5 Write stories and take photos as necessary
6.6 Page layout as necessary
6.7 Attend weekly full staff meeting, and furnish editorial report
6.8 Organize and run weekly editorial meetings
6.9 Attend other meetings as necessary to represent the editorial department
6.10 Make story assignments to other news staff
6.11 Set weekly rotation of "on-call" reporting for evening and weekend news coverage of major news events as they happen. Also include himself/herself in accepting weekend news duties on a regular basis. Copies of on-call duties to OM and posted in office.
6.12 Edit other reporters major stories
6.13 Review all letters to the editor, the and bring copies to publisher of any issues of significance or controversy before publishing
6.14 Membership in one city or county community organization.
6.15 Regular attendance at Chamber functions including at least 75% of Friday morning coffee events in SSC.
6.16 Write at least two editorials per month on local, state or national issues.
