Platte Institute Investigative Journalist
The Platte Institute for Economic Research is seeking to hire an investigative journalist. The purpose of the position is to incorporate the skills of an investigative journalist to examine the inner workings of local and state government in order to advance the Platte Institute mission.
The Platte Institute is a non-partisan research organization whose mission is to advance public policy alternatives that foster limited government, personal responsibility, and free enterprise for Nebraska. In operation since October 2007 the institute's staff and scholars study public policy problems and develop proposals to increase economic opportunity while protecting individual rights of Nebraskans. The Platte Institute promotes those findings by publishing timely studies, briefing papers, and other educational materials which help policymakers, the media, and the general public gain a better understanding of current issues.
The position will initially be funded by a one year grant. The Institute intends to continue with an investigative journalist on staff after that. Salary is negotiable based on experience and skills directly applicable to investigative journalism. Salary will be competitive with similar positions in Nebraska. Work at the Platte Institute can begin as soon as agreement on salary is reached. Work location is negotiable.
Experience covering public policy issues at all levels of Nebraska State and local government is strongly desired. The ability to use FOIA and other tools to uncover important documents is a plus. Experience working against a deadline is also a desired quality for this position.
