STUDENT NOTES

Five journalism majors were among the 25 NU students tapped for Mortar Board, the national academic honorary society, in February. The students are: LaSharah Bunting, news-editorial; Beth Lee and Trisha Mueret, broadcasting; Amanda Taylor and Amanda Wilcox, advertising.

Darren Ivy and Shannon Heffelfinger, junior news-editorial majors, have been chosen to receive two of eight sports journalism scholarships awarded by The Freedom Forum and the NCAA Foundation. The $3,000 scholarships were made to eight journalism students who will be seniors during the 1999-2000 school year. Applicants nationwide submitted a resume, clips and an essay about whether they thought the NCAA had the right to ban advertisements from companies that promoted or supported gambling. Photos of Ivy and Heffelfinger and the other six scholarship winners appeared in the 1999 NCAA Men's’ Basketball Final Four program.

Clint! Runge was named Nebraska Collegiate Entrepreneur of the Year by NU's Center for Entrepreneuership. In addition, his work was included in How magazine's 1999 design annual.

Don Trouba, an advertising major, is the author of a paper about a Czech newspaper, “The First Decades of Pokork Zapadu,” that was accepted for presentation at the Eastern Journalism Historians conference at the University of California, Berkeley, in February. Trouba wrote the paper when he was enrolled in Pete Mayeux’s mass media history course last semester.

The Public Relations Club coordinated a Tobacco Free Day at Culler Middle School in Lincoln April 14 as part of a competition sponsored by the Public Relations Society of America. The club members made packets for schools, organized media publicity and planned an assembly. They got Gov. Johanns to sign a proclamation, and arranged for Monty Christo, a Husker football player, to be guest speaker.

Five journalism students were recognized at the Chancellor’s Leadership Recognition Ceremony on April 15: Brooke Sevening, Ingrid Kuester, Alyssa Arends and Cara Medley, all advertising, and Allison Ebke, broadcasting.

NU journalism students swept the student division of the Nebraska News PhotographersAssociation, taking all but one award. Matt Miller was named Photographer of the Year in the “still” student division for the second consecutive year.

Ryan Soderlin received a first place award in the feature category and second place awards in illustration/fashion, sports feature and portrait. He also took second place in the student photographer of the year competition.

Lane Hickenbottom took third place in the student photographer of the year competition and earned first and second place awards in the sports action category, first place in spot news, picture story, portrait, illustration/fashion and sports feature and second place in feature.

Joe Hammeke received a second place award in pictorial and a third place award in sports action.
