Student notes

UNL students and alumni took the top three spots in the 2003 Nebraska News Photographers contest. Matt Miller, a 2000 graduate now at the Omaha World-Herald was named photographer of the year. Lane Hickenbottom, 2000, formerly of the Lincoln Journal Star, was runner-up. Current graduate student Kelli Kellogg took third place.

Juanita Page, a junior broadcasting journalism major, won a national championship at the 26th Annual American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament held at the University of Mississippi in April. Ninety universities took part in the tournament.

Rene Rinschen, a broadcasting major at UNL, received the 2003-04 Vincent Wasilewski Scholarship from the Broadcast Education Association.

Kristen Olson was accepted as the broadcasting intern for the Olympic Committee.

Thirteen journalism students were inducted Tuesday, April 8, into Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma, freshman honor societies.

  The students are:

  • Michael Bruntz, news-editorial;
  • Brandon Curtis, advertising; Amy Hinrichs, advertising (Alpha Lambda Delta only);
  • Jessica Johnson, advertising;
  • Leslie Johnson, advertising; Laura Liggett, broadcasting;
  • Jessica Lutton, advertising;
  • Lisa McEvoy, broadcasting (Alpha Lambda Delta only);
  • Maggie Pavelka, advertising (Phi Eta Sigma only);
  • Gregory Walklin, news-editorial;
  • Crystal Weaver, advertising; Jason Wiest, news-editorial (Alpha Lambda Delta only);
  • Bradley Young, broadcasting (Phi Eta Sigma only).

Lincoln Arneal, a junior news-editorial major from North Bend, was inducted into Innocents Society on Ivy Day, April 12. Founded in 1903, the Society of Innocents chooses members based on scholarship, leadership and service. Its membership is limited to 13 senior students.

Four junior journalism students were semi-finalists in the 2003 Student Leadership Awards program. They are:

  • Ashley Frear-Cooper, news-editorial and advertising;
  • Jeremy Gallant, news-editorial;
  • Betsy Garbacz, advertising;
  • Jeffrey West, broadcasting.

  They were honored at a dinner and ceremony on Friday, April 11.
