Advertising

Phyllis Larsen made a presentation on teaching at the summer Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference. The presentation was also published in the 2002 AEJMC Journal of Great Ideas for Teachers.

As adviser to UNL's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, Larsen initiated a mentoring project with 25 working professionals who will mentor students with career interests in public relations and corporate communication.

Nancy Mitchell is working on grants for two projects with Marc Kiviniemi of the UNL Psychology Department: Reducing Minority Health Disparities Through Health Communication and Neighborhood Walking Program in Census Tract 20.

Linda Shipley is on the editorial review boards for two national journals: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator and Journal of Advertising Education.

She continues to serve on the AEJMC Publications Committee and is the American Academy of Advertising representative to the Accrediting Council. She was on the site visit team to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos in October. She is also a member of the Editorial Board for Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly and Newspaper Research Journal.

Broadcasting

  Rick Alloway was MC for the banquet at the COJMC Alumni Reunion in September and was MC for the Nebraska Diplomat's annual economic development banquet, also in September.

He was moderator for a gubernatorial candidates' debate (broadcast statewide on radio and TV) from the Nebraska Broadcasters Association convention in Omaha in August, and he also moderated a debate between Regents' candidates Chuck Wilson and Tony Ojeda at the UNL Student Union in October.

He has been involved in a number of faculty and student video documentaries in the past months: as narrator for "House of Brews" about the increase in microbrew establishments and for graduate student Kathy Lee's video about Korean pottery. He was writer/producer/narrator for "The Four Seasons: A Year in the Life of a Nursery," a video detailing a year's worth of activity at a Lincoln garden center.

He was named an associate member of the graduate faculty in November.

He has been named a programming consultant on two episodes of the monthly nationally syndicated radio show "A Cappella Radio International".

He was MC for a CD release party from the Lincoln a cappella trio, Baby Needs Shoes, in September. He will be part of the COJMC group going to Cuba in January; his specific duties will relate to radio reports.

 Laurie Thomas Lee had a journal article accepted for publication in the Rutgers Computer & Technology Law Journal. The article, titled "The USA Patriot Act and Telecommunications: Privacy Under Attack," critiques provisions of the law pertaining to electronic surveillance and will appear in the Spring 2003 issue.

Lee also had a book review published in the December 2002 issue of the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, titled "Defining Privacy: Freedom in a Democratic Constitutional State."

Lee was on sabbatical in the fall to work on a book about online privacy to be published by Iowa State Press in late 2003. She hosted a panel presentation on "Patriotism vs. Freedom" as president-elect of the Academic Freedom Coalition of Nebraska for its annual meeting in November.

Peter Mayeux judged statewide documentary entries for May 13, 2002, Nebraska History Day Celebration at the Nebraska State Capitol. In November he completed an evaluation of a textbook manuscript in broadcast journalism for Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Inc. Also in November, he was recognized by the UNL Black Masque Chapter of Mortar Board at their eighth annual "People Who Inspire" Banquet. He has reactivated work on a prospective Diocese of Lincoln radio project.

Jerry Renaud completed the documentary, "Reflections on the Little Bighorn," which will air on Nebraska NET2 and WHUT-TV in Washington D.C.. He is working on a documentary on obesity to be completed in January. He has done pre-production work for a documentary on Cuba. He, Rick Alloway and grad student Dave Pittock produced a training video for Pfizer Inc. He and Hubert Brown, Syracuse University, presented a paper at the Mid-Year AEJMC conference in Athens, Ga., titled "A Week in the Life: An Examination of Image Portrayal in Two Local Television Markets."

Charlyne Berens received a teaching award from The Freedom Forum in August. The award was made to three journalism educators during the annual convention of the journalism educators' organization.

She is revising a book about the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature, under contract to the University of Nebraska Press. She was invited to make a presentation to newly elected state senators during their orientation program in November. She worked with the college's learning community and helped recruit honors students during the fall semester.

Joe Starita spent much of the summer working on a creative writing project and assisting the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society in preparing for the Sept. 9 grand opening of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center in Chadron.

He spent the fall teaching, organizing recruiting visits for summer internships, recruiting promising minority students to the college and fine-tuning myriad details for a January trip to Cuba with a dozen students in his Depth Reporting class.

Mike Stricklin was elected to a three-year term on the Partners of the Americas International Board of Directors on Nov. 23. The convention was held in Quito, Ecuador. Partners is a people-to-people organization sponsoring partnerships between the United States and countries in Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

George Tuck's work, the 87-image "Flat Places and Interesting People" photo exhibition ended its 10-month run Nov. 15 at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum on the West Texas A&M University campus in Canyon, Texas. It should be noted that a 10-month run for an exhibit is extremely unusual; most run only one or two months

Two of Tuck's black and white photographs are on exhibit at the Vivian Kiechel fine art gallery in Lincoln. He was a guest lecturer on photo ethics in two classes of Mass Media and Society and two classes of The Media Today (for non-journalism majors) and was the moderator for a panel discussion on Religion in the News.

He has conducted a tour of the Andersen Hall facilities for academic counselors from North and South Dakota, Missouri and Iowa, and he began a public series of monthly Friday Foto Flicks about photography and photographers.
